-span. president obama yesterday spent the afternoon with new jersey governor chris christi touring the damage across the state's coast left from hurricane sandy after surveying some of the wreckage and speaking with victims of the storm. both men spoke briefly about the coordination efforts between federal and local officials. >> good afternoon, everybody. thank you-all for coming today. i want to thank the members who are here as well. i want to thank the president. we spent significant afternoon together surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coastline. we were on marine one together, to show the president that personally. we had an opportunity to discuss it at length. then going over to the shelter here, to be able to meet with folks, have them see the president and his concern. the concern all of us have for making sure that things get back to normal as quickly as possible. we have lots of challenges. our challenge now is to get back to normalcy. the things we need to do is make sure we get power restored as quickly as possible. make sure people have clean drinking water and wast

was incredibly desire and last night governor chris christie made harsh words about those who chose not to evacuate. and saying the mayor had gone rogue and heeded people that can't need to heed. christie saying if you were stranded in atlantic city, you had to wait until daylight to be rescued. they just could not send emergency responders. and you can tell by the fact that even two dozen people who were at shelters had to be evacuated from the shelters because the flooding and the situation there got so bad. now of course overall, we'll have to wait until daylight for the damage lear to be assessed. we have high tide in just a few more hours which could possess more flooding risk, but people think the swors ovworst is over. >> we're glad you're still safe there. 8:37 is high tide and that is expected to bring more concerns about flooding. we'll check back in with her later this morning. the new york stock exchange and nasdaq will both be completely shut down for a second day in a row. the bond markets are closed today, as well. futures are continuing to trade. those prices will be

, the bipartisan cooperation that he demonstrated with chris christie, trying to make the point that this is when america is at its best. now he's got a better than expected jobs report and he can say america's coming back, home values are rising. we had the most private sector hiring in eight months. all those are elements of the president's argument. of course, mitt romney's argument is going to be is this the best we can do? we can do better. he has already been saying that earlier today, saying the president says this is the best it can be. i say it can't stay this way. there you have the two arguments framed as we go to a final weekend with the polls nationally showing a dead heat and in the swing states a slide advantage for president obama. >> obviously it's all happening, the theater of it is happening in the crucial states. the governor is in wisconsin today. as we can see, the president in ohio. you look at the top of drudge, john, and it's all about the complications of the recovery, the gas lines, the frustration. how much vulnerability does that leave the president even though he may

of jersey is sheltering in place as per the request of governor chris christie yesterday who urged his residents not to take any chances. from what we've seen, they've headed that warning. carol? >> that's a good thing. rob marciano reporting live from asbury park, new jersey. i should explain where i am. i'm in washington, d.c., today. below me is h street. a steady rain has been falling but not a heavy rain. the weird thing about this tropical storm, usually it's really warm during hurricanes. it's cold right now. a damp kind of cold. it kind of goes through every layer of your clothing. i mean, i am freezing right now. it's not even that cold really. probably 45 or 50 degrees. because it's wet and it's damp, it feels so much worse. as you can see, there's light traffic on h street. usually that street would be pretty chock full of cars. federal offices are closed today. a lot of people didn't go to work. of course, schools are closed all across the region. so people have really heeded warnings. they've stayed at home. and that is only a good thing. san sandy, of course, is expected

into work. bill: so the new jersey governor chris christie is touring some of the more devastated areas with the president yesterday up and down the east coast. with me to talk about this and a few other topics of the day, pennsylvania governor tom ridge, former governor. a romney supporter and former secretary of homeland security. mr. secretary, good morning toe you. >> thank you. bill: i need to november to three topics hot on the radar. it is a busy news time you understand. you have a lot of experience with this disaster area. how are they doing? what is the next wrinkle in the story as we uncover this with you know light again today? >> i think the most important thing to realize the head of fema, craig fugate, is an experienced man. i worked with him when he was running emergency management group in florida. i think you're going to see the dollars coming from the federal government but you will need the leadership from the individual governors and clearly mayor bloomberg and governor cuomo and governor christie can provide it. working in collaboration with the local officials. i

chris christie, et cetera, et cetera, it certainly doesn't hurt him, but mitt romney didn't misstep, he held his fire, he behaved properly. people can criticize him for that, but in the end it only helps a view of the president. >> we have to leave it there, ron has a great new piece as well, thank you. >>> a living nightmare for many residents on staten island as we have been talking about and we will talk about the greatest need, the government response and more with a local journalist there. the only time i've ever had a break is when i was on maternity leave. i have retired from doing this one thing that i loved. now, i'm going to be able to have the time to explore something different. it's like another chapter. i have a cold... i took dayquil, but i still have a runny nose. [ male announcer ] truth is, dayquil doesn't work on runny noses. what? [ male announcer ] it doesn't have an antihistamine. really? [ male announcer ] really. alka-seltzer plus cold and cough fights your worst cold symptoms, plus has a fast acting antihistamine to relieve your runny nose. [ sighs ] thank you!

big hit. the place to watch. evacuated yesterday by 4:00 p.m. and chris christie declaring a state of emergency there because of how bad conditions are supposed to get there. it's only 9:00 a.m. right now. you can see how bad it's getting. the waves are spilling up into the dunes and there is flooding in the street. there's structural damage just a couple blocks away that we'll check out. definitely a strengthening storm here on the shore of new jersey. carl? >> kayla, thank you. we'll come back to you a lot today. kayla tausche in cape may. 60 million people affected by this. it's a sixth of the country. >> i want to say that i am not the reason why kayla is down there in harm's way. it is not my fault. >> no one would want to be held responsible for that. >> somehow i'm her father. it's not my daughter. she's not down there. could you check my house in ocean grove where i have already written it off if you're down there. >> reporter: send me the address, jim. i'll walk over there and see how it looks. we're here. we might as well, right. >> i never felt it was such bad idea to ha

york? we have not heard from him at all? you see chris christie all the time? you do not see the governor of new york at all. host: we had a few stores and governor cuomo. but we can look for stories in this morning's paper. tell us how motivated you as a democrat are to go out to the polls and misery, and a state that is leaning pretty far to the republican column in the presidential race. is it to the senate race that will pull you out to the polls? caller: it is the president and senator. i really am a democrat die hard. i just cannot see any future with the republicans, what they are putting out there. host: carol from st. louis, thank you. we will go from hphil on our lie for independents, south carolina. good morning. caller: good morning. i want to make a couple of statements about mitt romney. i cannot understand how people trust romney like they do. knowing that he is the kind of person he is, he lies about everything. he lies about every situation. i cannot understand the people who vote republican all the time, how they both republican all the time. they are going
